SUBMISSION GUIDE
This is an outline of rules basic to MWSA style for use in articles, reviews, and the anthology. Credibility for the organization dictates quality content, dignified presentation, multicultural appeal, consistency, and neutrality in politics and religion.
Refer to The Chicago Manual of Style, 16th Edition, for questions of grammar. Refer to Merriam-Webster’s New Collegiate, 10th Edition or http://www.merriam-webster.com/ as the primary authority on spelling and word usage. Use Webster’s first spelling if there is a choice and use American (not British) spellings.
GENERAL CONSIDERATIONS
MWSA is a nonprofit organization. We do not pay for articles.
MWSA reserves the right to edit any content or image for publication.
MWSA Publications reserves the right to decline any article or ad it deems inappropriate or offensive.
The views and opinions expressed in MWSA publications are those of the individual authors and do not necessarily represent the official policy or position of the Military Writers Society of America.
AUTHOR PHOTOS, SUPPORTING IMAGES, WORD COUNT
Send a high-resolution headshot and any supporting images with your article.
Headshots are typically used for authors of two-page spreads.
We standardize the color and size of the photo.
High-resolution photos typically range in the > 500KB above size, not <250 KB. The higher the resolution, the better.
MWSA Publications Team reserves the right to alter, adjust, and supply images as needed.
We list names of authors in the Table of Contents, and then put any titles (Ph.D., etc.) on the bylines.
For Dispatches Magazine, we accept articles of 1500 words or less. We can run articles over the word count, but they must be submitted in multiple parts.
PHOTO CAPTIONING
If you send additional photos, include captions that avoid redundancy and are appropriate to the article context.
Ensure you own the rights to any images or have been given permission to use supplied images.
For photos submitted by article authors, the credit will read: Photos courtesy of the [family/military branch/media outlet] or Photos courtesy of [Individual’s Name].
